The owner of the golf course decided to close the on the 15th July for the 1st time in 14 years, to carry out maintenance and course improvements. This work in progress will take 6 weeks to complete and the golf club will re-open on the 1st September, 2010.

The possibility of remaining open during this period was not realistic. Charging green fees while this work in progress was being carried out was not an option the owners considered. The golf club is aware of the client’s expectations and it would not have been viable offering green fees for limited access to the course.

Besides the ongoing work in progress, extra attention is being given to all of the fairways and most of the greens which will further improve the course for the forthcoming winter season and future seasons ahead. There is no doubt that it will also have a positive effect on the client’s satisfaction with the golf course. The owner of the golf course continues to strive to enhance the facilities and improve the golf club whenever and wherever possible.

11 children signed up for the beginner’s course organised by Golf Las Americas and sponsored by the Canarian Golf Federation. The course was open to children between the ages of 6 – 15 years old and the only condition was that they had never played golf previously.

The professional responsible for teaching the children was Alejandro Claverie who was assisted by Roberto Perez. Every Monday, Wednesday & Friday for 6 weeks beginning in the 1st week of June, the children were taught for 2 hours on each of the days and their enthusiasm was evident during the 50 hours of classes they received on all facets of the game. The course culminated in a small tournament of 9 holes which was followed by drinks & snacks at the clubhouse. The participants were presented with their prizes from the tournament but more importantly the presentation of their diplomas and Federation licence by Dña. Maria Luisa Fornies del Castillo the President of the Canarian Golf Federation.

As you will see from the photos of the last day and the prize giving, the children more than enjoyed their experience and from the quality of the golf played by some of them in the tournament, they have left us in little doubt that there will be a future star amongst them.

We would like to thank the President and the Federation for dedicating their time and investment in the future of golf on the islands.

OMM could not have chosen a better day. Not only was history made for the Spanish International football team, but it was also a historic day for OMM as they inaugerated their new club in Playa de Las Américas with an invitional golf tournament held at Golf Las Américas.

The OMM club which is situated in the heart of Playa de Las Américas on Avda Noelia Afonso, offers Food, drinks and a late night chic club. Yesterday to oficially launch the opening of their facilities, they hosted an Invitational Shotgun Stableford Tournament for 94 players, offering on course drinks, snacks and gifts and following the tournament the presentation of prizes was organised at the newly opened club.

The expectancy of what was to happen later in the day added greatly to the atmosphere of the tournament with many players choosing to wear the colour Red. Although the weather which was predicted to be hot turned out to be very pleasent and the winners from the different categories posted good scores.

On a final note we wish OMM success with their new venture

Whilst Trish Johnson was asserting her position on Day 3 of the Ladies European Tour event, the Tenerife Ladies Open in the north of the island, the IX Tournament of the Villa Cortés was been played in the sunny south at Golf Las Americas. The format for this years tournament was a pairs scramble and the players took great advantage of the beautiful conditions to post great scores.

There were many interesting pairings who all tried to capture the prestigious 1st prize in both categories. In the 2nd category the Mother and son pairing of Davina & David Howard won the 1st prize of their category although they were made to work hard to capture their trophy beating Norberto Garcia Hernandez & Miriam Muro Rafael. Although both teams finished on the same score the Howard family won by playing off a lower handicap.

In the 1st category, the pairings were equally competitive but the experience of the local pair Cristobel Sides Galan & Juan Porcuna Amil saw them win by a 1 shot advantage over Damien Goldacre Spencer & Stefano de Martini.

The day’s play was followed by a cocktail and dinner at the Hotel Villa Cortés. However, as most as most of the participants were keen to see how Spain got on in their quarter final in the World Cup, Sr. Gassmann provided a lounge for all to view the match prior to the dinner and the prize giving cermony.

Another 176 players got a taste of the Golf Las Americas experience as the Tenerife and La Gomera Golf Circuit brought the 2010 second round to the course last Saturday. Was the weather especially ordered? it seemed to be as clear blue skies, hot sun and a cool breeze off the Atlantic for comfort was the order of the day. Las Americas was buzzing with World Cup fever but thanks to the naturally protected wrapping of nature all that was shut out, and not a hint of a vuvuzela in the air.

The day was played with a friendly but keen rivalry, trophies from the Canary Islands Golf Federation and the first tournament awards were given to runners up

The ball nearest to the pin for ladies at the 8th hole was for Susana Fernandez de  Caleya with 172 cm and the Mens for Manuel Martinez with 260 cm. The Seniors Prize went to Anthlony Kevin Spence with 36 points and the sought after Scratch prize went to David Ian Pritchard with 36 points. A special mention must go to Sofia Puig who was playing in her 1st tournament and recorded a magnificent score of 50 points.

The IV Circuit consists of a total of 7 events that will take place over the summer at the following courses; Buenavista Golf, Golf Las Americas, Golf Del Sur, Golf Costa Adeje, Tecina Golf, Abama Golf and the final will return to Golf del Sur.
